About Me

My name is Rachel Hines,

and I'm about to complete my third year in community college (my fifth semester at Pasadena City College), and will attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall.

When I first began college, I attended College of the Canyons in Valencia as a Communications major and thought that I wanted to work as a broadcast journalist. After that first semester in the fall of 2012, I started attending PCC because I'd heard great things about its fashion program, and changed my major to Fashion Design. Over the next two semesters (from Spring 2013 and Fall 2013), I took as many fashion courses as I could, eventually earning my Fashion Assistant Certificate of Achievement.

By the end of Fall 2013, however, I discovered that although I certainly have a passion for style and the fashion industry, designing is not my forte. While others in the program had a particular aptitude for creating something entirely new out of thoughts and concepts, I was more of a concrete thinker. I realized that I am much more adept at organizing already existing materials, which is why I prefer personal styling and event planning to design.

In the spring of 2014, I studied abroad in Oxford, England through a program at PCC, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Leading into that trip, I knew that I was very influenced by other cultures and their differing perspectives, which I was able to study through three different anthropology courses. Studying abroad provided an opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and learn more about myself.

Throughout that semester, I was able to travel to places I never thought I would go this early in my life: England, Scotland, France, Spain, and, most surprisingly, Egypt. Observing and experiencing differing cultural viewpoints really sparked my love for anthropology, and also gave me new insights as to how I can incorporate all of my knowledge into any future profession.

After this term, I'm transferring to Cal Poly Pomona as a Hospitality Management Major, through which I seek to go into event management. Ideally, I will eventually work behind the scenes planning fashion shows. But before then, because I know that I will need to work up to that and build my career network, I will likely work in other settings, like weddings, catering services, or conferences.

I have an insatiable curiosity and yearning for knowledge, a desire to know and understand the world around me. Thus, wherever my life leads, I want to continue learning every step of the way.
